Canada’s Department of Finance says listed counter-tariffs on U.S. goods took effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026. Its backgrounder records 15%, 25%, and 50% rates for listed products. It does not establish the measures’ economic or consumer effects.
The official value
The backgrounder says the counter-tariffs cover products representing $27.6 billion in imports from the United States. That is the official-record value used here.
Rates and sectors
Individual product rates are 15%, 25%, or 50%, based on the matching U.S. rate for the same goods. The record identifies steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics as focus sectors; those examples are not the complete tariff-item list.
The in-transit limit
The record says U.S. goods in transit to Canada when the measures came into force are not covered. It does not decide the treatment of an individual import, company, or shipment, so this is not importer advice.
What remains unsettled
The backgrounder does not settle future trade, business, consumer-price, legal, diplomatic, or supply-chain effects. A later update needs a dated primary government record.
