How to Confirm You Have the Right FAFSA PDF Edition

Three cover markers confirm your FAFSA PDF's award year; guessing an adjacent year's filename returns a 404, not the form.

What matters now

  • The 2026–27 FAFSA PDF's cover reads July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 as its award-year range.
  • The cover's submission window runs from October 1, 2025 to June 30, 2027.
  • Federal Student Aid's resources page links this file as the 2026–27 FAFSA PDF (English).
  • Editing the filename to try 2025-26 or 2027-28 returns HTTP 404 on studentaid.gov.

If you downloaded a paper FAFSA PDF from Federal Student Aid, you can confirm it’s the correct award-year edition by checking three markers printed on the form’s own cover: the filename’s award year, the date-range heading, and the submission-window sentence. On the current form, those markers read “FAFSA Form / July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027” and a submission window described as “no earlier than October 1, 2025… no later than June 30, 2027,” both at studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf. You cannot get the adjacent 2025-26 or 2027-28 form by editing that filename yourself on this path — the adjacent-year filenames both return “HTTP 404” on the same path (2025-26 PDF; 2027-28 PDF).

Key points

  • The current PDF’s cover states “FAFSA Form / July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027” (studentaid.gov).
  • The same cover carries a submission-window sentence: “no earlier than October 1, 2025… no later than June 30, 2027” (studentaid.gov).
  • Federal Student Aid’s own resources page links this file as the “2026–27 FAFSA PDF (English)” (studentaid.gov/resources).
  • Editing the filename to guess an adjacent award year does not work: the 2025-26 filename returns “HTTP 404” (studentaid.gov), and the 2027-28 filename also returns “HTTP 404” (studentaid.gov).

Match filename to resources page

The filename you download should match what Federal Student Aid itself links from its resources page, which currently lists this file as the “2026–27 FAFSA PDF (English)” (studentaid.gov/resources). If the filename on your downloaded copy doesn’t match the award year Federal Student Aid links from that page, you don’t have the current edition.

Check the cover date range

Open the PDF and look at the cover page. The current edition’s cover reads “FAFSA Form / July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027” (studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf). That date range is the award year the form covers, and it should match the award year in the filename.

Check the submission window

The same cover page also states a submission window: the form can be submitted “no earlier than October 1, 2025… no later than June 30, 2027” (studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2026-27-fafsa-form.pdf). This sentence is a third, independent marker on the same cover — if all three markers (filename, date-range heading, and submission-window sentence) agree, you have the correct edition in hand.

Filename edits don’t work

Instead of checking those three cover markers, some readers try a shortcut: editing the filename directly to guess a different award year’s form — for example, changing “2026-27” to “2025-26” or “2027-28” in the URL. On studentaid.gov, that does not work on this path: the 2025-26 filename returns “HTTP 404” (studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2025-26-fafsa-form.pdf), and the 2027-28 filename also returns “HTTP 404” (studentaid.gov/sites/default/files/2027-28-fafsa-form.pdf). Neither adjacent-year filename serves a document at this path.

These 404 results only show that the 2025-26 and 2027-28 forms are not served at the parallel adjacent-year filename on studentaid.gov; they don’t show whether prior-year FAFSA PDFs are archived anywhere else on the public web, and this article doesn’t try to answer that.

This article also doesn’t offer any guidance on how to fill out the FAFSA form or on any financial-aid eligibility or award decision — it covers only how to confirm which edition of the public form you’re holding.
